Great book. Fully recommend to anyone who takes kendo seriously.
Dear Jindřich Ziegelheim,
As I promised, after finishing your book, I wanted to share my feedback.
Thank you again for your book. I found it very deep and truly enjoyable. I especially liked the format: it feels like well-organized notes on many topics collected throughout your long Kendo journey, which made it easy and engaging to read.
At my current level, I found the whole **“Regular Training”** section particularly valuable – especially the parts on **Nidan and Rensoku-waza, Kakarigeiko, Jigeiko, Tsuba-seme, fighting in chudan against jodan, and shinai maintenance**.
I also really enjoyed your stories about training in Japan (especially in winter). I read those parts side by side with *A Lifelong of Budo* by my sensei, Luis Vitalis, where training in Japan is also described in detail. It helped me dive deeply into that atmosphere – and I hope one day to experience such intense winter training myself.
I also found the **“Competitions”** notes extremely valuable, especially because I had my first shiai just yesterday. Your advice on preparing body and mind for competition is hard to overestimate. I followed most of your tips and felt calm, focused, and full of positive fighting spirit during the cup. Thank you very much for sharing this knowledge.
The section on judging is still difficult for me at my current level – I read it with interest, but I know I need more experience to understand it deeply.
Finally, the part about **grading** is very useful for me now, since I am preparing for my first **Ikkyu exam in November**. Your explanation of what is expected at this level, together with advice from my dojo senseis and senpais, is very inspiring and motivating. It was also very interesting for me to read about the requirements for higher dan levels; however, just like with judging, I feel I need to return to these notes again and again throughout my journey to understand them more deeply, especially for the very high dan levels.
Overall, this is definitely a book I will return to again and again at different stages of my Kendo journey. Thank you sincerely for publishing such a valuable work. I can really feel the years of experience behind it, and for a fresh kendoka like me, the book is a wonderful companion. (I already recommend it to a lot of people, and I’m not going to stop )
With respect and gratitude,
Artem Kobzar
